March 28 , 2005 by Editor

The city of Phoenix Desert West Senior Center will host a free Cesar Chavez celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Desert West Community Center, 6501 W. Virginia Ave., in honor of the Cesar Chavez holiday on March 31.

Harry Garewal, president of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will welcome attendees to the event to celebrate Chavez, a man who dedicated his life to serving others.

The event includes live music by Marcos de Niza Senior Center participants Stanislaw Pyskow and Jose Cobarrubias. Francisco Montoya, Arizona regional director of the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, will narrate several videos on the life of Cesar Chavez. Also, international author Stella Pope Duarte will offer historic readings about Cesar Chavez and will read her own work, “The Story of a Movement.” She also is the author of “Let Their Spirits Dance,” “Stories in the Stepmother Tongue,” “Fragile Night” and “Que Bailen Sus Espiritus.” Duarte’s work has won awards and honors nationwide, including a nomination for the Pushcart Prize in literature.

The event is sponsored by the city's Human Services Department Senior Services Division Desert West Senior Center, and Parks and Recreation Department. For more information, call 602-495-3711.
