June: Chandler Regional Hospital Encourages Attending Support Groups
June 12 , 2004 by Amy Andelora
Strong data shows that people suffering from a health issue find solace in support groups.
Chandler Regional Hospital offers more than a dozen support groups for a variety of diseases. Many of the support groups are not only for people who have a disease, but also for their loved ones.
Some of the support groups include Better Breathers for chronic lung disease; Diabetes Support Group; Leukemia and Lymphoma Support Group; Movement and More for neurological disorders; and several groups for coping with various forms of cancer and cancer treatment.
Particularly when patients do not have a strong support system at home, support groups produce beneficial effects on anxiety, depression, perception of pain and feelings of isolation.
The goal of a support group is to bring people together so they can share their experiences and information about a common issue.
“The group experience is extremely powerful,” says Dave Covert, president and CAO of Chandler Regional Hospital. “People discover they are not alone in dealing with their health issues. They have many common threads, which is extremely comforting.”
