April: Safety for a Sunny Day
April 10 , 2004 by Amy Andelora
It’s that time of year when the weather is ideal for our favorite outdoor activities. This season is the reason so many of us live here and why so many visit.
But beautiful weather also means more time in the sun, and it’s important to protect ourselves from its damaging effects.
Excess exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays can cause premature aging, wrinkled and leathery skin, sunburn, cataracts, and skin cancer.
One out of every three cancer diagnoses is skin cancer, and Arizona has the highest rate of skin cancer in the country.
Follow these simple tips while you’re enjoying a sunny day and minimize your risk:
1. Apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15;
2. Wear hats with a brim;
3. Avoid the sun from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense;
4. Wear sunglasses;
5. Stay covered with long sleeves and pants whenever possible;
6. Stay in the shade as much as possible;
7. Stay away from reflective surfaces;
8. Do not sunbathe;
9. Do not use artificial tanning equipment;
10. Examine your skin regularly and notify your physician if you notice any unusual changes.
Make sure that your fun days in the sun are as safe as possible so you can be sure to enjoy many more of them.
