Phoenix Art Museum Panel
June 13 , 2005 by Kathleen GordenDon't miss the panel discussion, "What is Surrealism? Is it Relevant in Today's Art World?” which will be held at Phoenix Art Museum, Whiteman Hall, on Thursday, June 9, at 7:00 pm. This event is being held in conjunction with the exhibition Surrealism USA that will run from June 5 - September 25 at the Phoenix Art Museum.Rachel Bess, a local Surrealist artist, will be among the panelists and will discuss how her unusual and sometimes disturbing images evolve.
Rachel Bess graduated from the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University with a degree in painting, and her work has been shown around the country. For the last four years, Rachel has been a life-drawing instructor at New School for the Arts.
Her oil-on-panel paintings focus on confronting death, fear, and the improbable. At first glance the work appears beautifully realistic and familiar, but the more one looks at it details come out that make the imagery more strange and dreamlike or, perhaps, slightly nightmarish.
