Desert Mountain Park Grand Opening
April 2, 2005! 

The Southeast Diamondbacks Little League opening day games will be played all day in conjunction with Desert Mountain Park’s grand opening.  The league will have fun and games for kids, entertainment and vendors at the park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Town’s first new park is located at Hawes and Ocotillo roads.

The Parks and Recreation Department sponsors special events for the entire community throughout the year. Events include the Holiday Tree Lighting and Queen Creek Country Parade, both held in December, as well as the Spring Family Celebration in the spring and a Community Summer Celebration in July. Specific dates and times will be listed here as events are planned, as well as on the Meeting and Events page of this website.

Desert Mountain Park Dedication and
Southeast Diamondbacks Little League Opening Day

The Town of Queen Creek’s first new park  will be dedicated in a ceremony at Desert Mountain Park, along with the Southeast Diamondbacks Little League opening day festivities from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 2.

 

The park dedication ceremonies will be held at the Desert Mountain Park ballfield four-field complex from 2-3 p.m.  Cherry cola and popcorn refreshments will be served after the dedication.

 

During the day and evening, the Southeast Diamondbacks Little League will be hosting inflatable play equipment for youth, an auction of goody-baskets, as well as its opening day games. 

New amenities in the park, include twins of youth baseball, youth softball and multi-purpose fields, volleyball and basketball courts, as well as, parking lots, one large, and five small, picnic ramadas; a play station and a sand dig play area for children; park benches, landscaping, a storage-and-automatic pump irrigation system, a desert botanical garden, and an equestrian staging area.  The baseball and softball fields have a raised spectator plaza, enclosed dugouts and Princess77 golf-style turf.

 

Many of the programs offered by the Town of Queen Creek's Parks and Recreation Department will be held at Desert Mountain Park. Offerings will include Little League and coach-pitch baseball, t-ball, softball for youth, as well as Town youth soccer and flag football, independent youth tackle football and soccer, and girls' softball. The park also features two children's playgrounds: an interpretive sand-dig playground and xx-station playground.  Multi-use fields will offer places for families to picnic and fly kites, as well as hosting a variety of future traditional special community events such as the Queen Creek Spring Family Celebration, Monsoon Madness, Bike Rodeo and more.

 

The Desert Mountain Park construction was paid for out of the Town’s development impact fees and is part of the Town’s capital improvement projects.

 

The Town’s parks, trails and open space committee consisted of committee chair, and council member, Lisa Coletto-Cohen, council member, Jon Wootten, former council member David Dobbs, Keith and Belinda Ehlert, Terry Roberts, Mary Hauser, Debby Rachocki, Silvia Centoz, Gary Brown, Sharon Steinhauer, Kirby Chadwick, Eric Kerr, Susan Shifman and Dru Alberti.  The committee worked with staff and J2 Engineering and Environmental Design to master plan the facility and guide the public involvement process in 2002 and 2003.

 

The Town’s project staff included Creighton Wright, assistant director of parks and recreation, project manager, Dave Martinez, capital improvement coordinator, inspector, Lisa Padilla, parks, recreation facilities development coordinator, administration.  Also assisting in the project was the Recreation Advisory Board, which included committee chair, David Dobbs, council member Jon Wootten, Carlos Acuna, Tom Alberti, Sam Cruz, Linda Huber, and Susan Shifman.

 

The contractor was Valley Rain Construction Company, which constructed the park using the design-build method, which has only been legal in Arizona for about three years.  Valley Rain’s design-build team consisted of J2 Engineering and Environmental design (landscape design), Wright Engineering Corporation (electrical), Dick & Fritsche Design Group (architecture), and Aqua Engineering (irrigation).
