Tempe's Annual Bike Week Set for April
March 17 , 2005 by Kathleen GordenThe city of Tempe Transit Office, Tempe in Motion, will hold its annual Bike Week April 16 through 24 to encourage people to use bikes as an alternative mode of transportation.
Tempe Bike Week activities include the TIM Triathlon, Bike to Work and School Day and Tempe Community Bike Ride. (Please note that the Country Club Way Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Public Art Celebration originally scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at Cole Park has been postponed.)
TIM Triathlon - April 16
The first annual TIM Triathlon is scheduled for April 16. Participants should meet in the parking lot on the north side of Kiwanis Park (Baseline and Mill) at 9 a.m. to enjoy a leisurely nine mile bus, bike, walk triathlon. All participants will receive free breakfast snacks from Trader Joe's and the first 100 participants will receive free T-shirts.
Participants will be entered to win a free bicycle from Ehrhardt's Schwinn. Helmets are required. Register by April 1 at www.tempe.gov/bikeprogram.
Bike to Work and School Day - April 20
Tempe's annual Bike to Work and School Day is set for April 20. All riders will receive free breakfast snacks and the first 325 riders will receive free T-shirts. Participants should bike between 6 and 8 a.m. to one of the following breakfast locations:
* Whole Foods Market, 5120 S. Rural Road, at the northwest corner of Rural and Baseline roads
* Wildflower Bread Company, 6428 S. McClintock Drive, at the southwest corner of McClintock Drive and Guadalupe Road
* Berning's Fine Jewelry, 1721 E. Warner Road, at the southwest corner of McClintock Drive and Warner Road
* Bruegger's Bagels, 1038 S. Mill Ave., at the northwest corner of Mill Avenue and 11th Street
Community Ride - April 20
Join Mayor Hugh Hallman at 7 a.m. April 20 for a community bicycle ride. Members of the City Council and Tempe Transportation Commission will meet at Whole Foods Market and bike to Bruegger's Bagels in downtown Tempe. The public is encouraged to participate.
Country Club Way Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Public Art Celebration is Postponed
The Country Club Way & US 60 Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge and Public Art Celebration originally scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at Cole Park has been postponed. Due to the large amount of rain that fell this winter, the park renovation projects were delayed and will not be completed by April 23.
