Temporary Public Art Projects Join Art Detour this Weekend
March 04 , 2005 by EditorA bejeweled pig and rooster wait patiently at a hitching post in Encanto Park, while trash cans embellished with found and recycled objects make functional art for park visitors. These and other temporary public art projects debut at Phoenix parks beginning this weekend, March 4-6.
In conjunction with Art Detour 17, Artlink's annual self-guided tour of downtown art spaces, six local artists will launch temporary public art projects through the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture. The Artists' Initiative temporary public art projects provide a valuable professional development opportunity for emerging Arizona artists.
Temporary public art projects will be installed over the next two months and will remain on display for up to three months. Projects will be located in Phoenix parks, including Encanto and Hance parks. A map of projects and locations is available online at phoenix.gov/arts.
Participating artists include Jose Benavides, Mary Consie, Lorin Labardee, Christy Puetz, Chris Rush, and Angela Cazel Jahn and the Phoenix Family Museum Teen Muses.
Artists' Initiative temporary public art projects are funded by Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department Percent-for-Art Funds. For more information on these projects and artists, and a map of project locations, visit phoenix.gov/arts, or call the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture at 602-262-4637.
