International Women's Day Luncheon Set for Feb. 28
February 07 , 2005 by EditorDr. Julianne Malveaux, a nationally known economist, author and commentator, will be the keynote speaker at the city of Phoenix's 14th annual International Women's Day luncheon, noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at the Phoenix Civic Plaza Ballroom, Third and Jefferson streets. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.
"Celebrating Women of Vision and Courage" is the theme of the luncheon hosted by the city of Phoenix, the Phoenix Women's Commission and the International Women's Day Steering Committee.
"We especially reflect on past female leaders who have led the charge to eliminate all forms of discrimination, celebrate the achievements of current female leaders present today and offer our best wishes and support for future female leadership," said Christine Wilkinson, honorary chair, and senior vice president and secretary of the University, Arizona State University.
Malveaux is a writer and syndicated columnist as well as a committed activist and civic leader. Her observations on issues such as race, culture, gender and their economic impacts are helping to shape public view in the 21st Century. Well known for appearances on national network programs, Malveaux is a charismatic and popular guest on a variety of shows including ABC's "Politically Incorrect" and Fox News Channel's "O'Reilly Factor."
An accomplished author and editor, she most recently co-authored "Unfinished Business: A Democrat and a Republican Take on the 10 Most Important Issues Women Face." Malveaux will be signing and selling this book after the event. She is a moving speaker whose life experiences have created a unique perspective that will leave everyone re-evaluating the way they view the world.
The event emcee is Tara Hitchcock, 3TV Arizona's Family. International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the struggle of women to improve their lives. Tickets are $50 for general admission and $35 for students and senior citizens and are available at the Phoenix Civic Plaza box office at 602-262-7272. Corporate table reservations also are available.
Prior to the event, a photo display and biographies of 30 well-known women will be on display in the Civic Plaza Ballroom lobby along with colorful framed posters of four women, called "Guardians." The photos and posters will be for sale to attendees through a silent auction.
Platinum sponsors of the event include Arizona Public Service, ARAMARK, Arizona Informant, Arizona Woman, city of Phoenix, 3TV Arizona's Family and Prensa Hispana. America West Airlines, Arizona State University, Maricopa Community College District Office and Tieken:Moret are Gold sponsors.
