Eastlake Park Hosts 2005 Juneteenth/Black History Month Celebration
January 11 , 2005 by EditorThe 37th annual Pride, Tradition, Success - A Juneteenth/Black History Month Celebration will take place on Feb. 3 to 5 at Eastlake Park, 15th Street and Jefferson Avenue, and will feature three days of multicultural entertainment that will include music, dance, food, children's activities and much more.
Juneteenth, also known as African American Emancipation Day, commemorates freedom, emphasizing education and achievement. The event raises money for scholarships and since 1968 more than 800 college scholarships have been awarded to minority and economically disadvantaged youth in the area.
Here's the three-day lineup:
- Feb. 3 - 4 to 7 p.m. Black History Youth Rally & Youth Basketball Game "
- Feb. 4 - 7 p.m. Juneteenth Youth Talent Show "
- Feb. 5 - 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Juneteenth/Black History Month Parade & Festival Parade begins at 10 a.m., Jefferson Avenue from Eighth to 15th Streets.
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department co-sponsors this event with Juneteenth Tradition, Inc., a non-profit organization.
