Come See Mesa Arts Center’s New Temporary Public Art Installation by Mary Consie December 16th
December 14 , 2006 by Editor(Mesa, Ariz.) The Mesa Arts Center Temporary Installation program features two emerging Arizona artists each year who develop a site-specific piece for the campus to be displayed for approximately 4 months. The public is invited to watch as Mary Consie’s piece “The Stragglers” is installed this Saturday Dec 16 from 12pm-4pm.
About the selection:
A request for qualifications was released on August 1, 2006. The selection panel, consisting of one Museum and Cultural Advisory Board member, one Mesa Arts Center volunteer and one Mesa Arts Center curatorial staff member, met on September 1 to review submittals that ultimately resulted in the selection of artist Mary Consie of Mesa. Ms. Consie was then asked to develop a proposal for final submission. In October, her proposal was unanimously approved by the selection panel and the Museum and Cultural Advisory Board.
About the artwork:
Ms. Consie has created three abstract sculptures that will be placed in the outdoors space at the south end of the Nesbitt/Elliott Playhouse, near the south parking lot. Each sculpture is made of a steel armature encased in Styrofoam and is approximately 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide.
“The nature of my artwork is to create sculptural forms that allow for viewer interaction, reaction and interpretation. In all of my public pieces, my goal is to engage the viewer. This artwork contains three figures that appear to move through the Mesa Arts Center and look to be alive as they migrate through the space. While the forms represent no actual animal, item or structure, they draw from the real world in a simplified manner.” – Mary Consie.
About the artist:
After a successful career in the health profession, Mary Consie returned to school to pursue a degree in the fine arts. Ms. Consie received her BFA in sculpture from Arizona State University in 2006. In 2005, she received a commission from the City of Phoenix Public Art Program for Artists Initiative, an annual temporary public art installation program. She has also exhibited locally in numerous group shows.
