Tempe City Council to vote on agreement to bring Insight Bowl to Tempe
July 18 , 2005 by Kathleen GordenThe Tempe City Council will vote on a memorandum of understanding to bring the Insight Bowl to Tempe at a special Tempe City Council meeting at 4 p.m. on July 19 in the City Council Chambers, 31 E. Fifth St., garden level. The memorandum of understanding between the Insight Bowl and Tempe will pave the way for the December 2006 game to be played at Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium.
This agreement would set the stage for the Insight Bowl to be played in Tempe for eight years, beginning with the December 2006 game. In turn, Tempe would contribute to the Insight Bowl game to ensure a Big 12 and Big Ten conference match-up. Teams from these conferences are a great win for Tempe and Insight. They both have strong fan support and a high rate of travel to bowl games.
The agreement will include Tempe, Arizona to the Insight Bowl trademark.
This directly links the bowl to Tempe as its home town and will provide Tempe recognition on a local and national level from all media outlets, all promotional merchandise and all materials used to promote the event.
Tempe would have one of the participating teams stay at a Tempe hotel with the addition of the second team once another hotel with competitive amenities is built. The media hotel and headquarters would also be located in a Tempe hotel near the stadium that can accommodate the necessary meeting rooms and press conferences.
The economic impact of a bowl game of this stature is significant for Tempe. Regionally, it would bring tens of thousands of tourists and generate tens of millions of dollars for the local economy.
Insight will be the title sponsor of the New Years' Eve Block Party in downtown Tempe, beginning in 2006. This partnership will link the Insight name to all related events in Tempe.
