National Traffic Signal Report Card results provide a benchmark for signal operations in Mesa
April 22 , 2005 by EditorTo gauge traffic signal operations, a national assessment was conducted by the National Transportation Operations Coalition (NTOC) to develop the first-ever National Traffic Signal Report Card. The assessment was conducted in the fall of 2004 and more than 370 agencies responded from 49 states, including Mesa
’s transportation division. The national results were released by the NTOC on April 20th, 2005. The results show that on a 100-point scale, the overall national score is in the low 60s. The entire survey can be found on the NTOC web siteIn relation to the national results, Mesa traffic signal operations fared slightly better. Mesa scored above average in the Signal Operations and Coordinated Systems categories, showing that staff is working hard at reducing overall traffic delays. Mesa also scored better than average in the Signal Operations at Individual Intersections category. An area Mesa could improve upon is Detection Systems, an area that staff is already working hard to enhance. An advanced detection system is key to providing the public with important information about roadway conditions in a timely and efficient manner.
"We are looking forward to using the results from the National Traffic Signal Report Card to guide us in future decisions involving traffic signal operations," says Jan Siedler, signal systems supervisor. "Overall, this information provides our staff with a valuable benchmark as we work to make the travel experience better for all who drive in Mesa."
