Councilmember teams with Library to send books to Iraq
March 23 , 2005 by EditorAbout 500 books were mailed to U.S. soldiers in Iraq recently, thanks to the work of a City Councilmember and Chandler librarian. The books were left unsold after a benefit book sale at the Basha Library when Chandler City Councilmember Matt Orlando noticed them and immediately thought of troops overseas.
A call to Basha Library branch manager Lise Chlebanowski began the process. Through a contact she had in Iraq, the books were addressed and mailed through the City’s administrative services division a few weeks ago. This week, an e-mail arrived detailing the joy the books have brought to the troops.
“We have gotten the books, and with great excitement the soldiers here went
right through them looking for just what they wanted,” Ben Sprouse, a Chaplain with the United States Army stationed in Iraq, wrote in his e-mail. “We have also added them to a post-wide library which allows thousands of troops to pull from the resources! Thank you so much! I myself am in the midst of a little sci-fi.”
Councilmember Orlando, a Colonel in the Arizona Air National Guard, said he was glad to support the troops and thanked City staff for its work in the delivery.
