VOLUNTEERS CAN EARN BIKES THROUGH HANDLEBAR HELPERS PROGRAM

March 21 , 2005 by Editor

Both children and adults can do valuable volunteer work and at the same time earn credits to get a refurbished bicycle through the city's Handlebar Helpers program.

Bikes are "priced" between 20 and 50 hours. Once a participant has enrolled in the program, they work between 5 and 10 hours at a selected volunteer facility.

Then participants come to the bikeshop to pick out the specific bike they want to earn. That way, volunteers can recondition the bicycle while volunteer hours are being completed.

Participants are also awarded a helmet and a lock with their bike.

Participants can volunteer at their local non-profit organization, park or community center, their local school -- anywhere where there is someone to verify volunteer hours.

Participants must sign up for the program before tallying their volunteer hours. To sign up and receive an enrollment form, call (480) 312-2771. Program brochures are also available at local community centers and libraries. More information is also available by email at: terickson@scottsdaleaz.gov

Include an address and you will be mailed a brochure.
