Pedestrian Improvements on Camelback Road Introduced
January 11 , 2005 by EditorDistrict 6 Councilman Greg Stanton is announcing pedestrian improvements on Camelback Road between 24th and 26th streets. The city of Phoenix has instituted the following changes:
- Signs telling pedestrians not to cross except at crosswalks are posted along the median between 24th and 26th streets.
- Countdown signals have been installed, alerting pedestrians how much time they have to walk across the road.
- The speed limit has been lowered to 35 mph between 24th and 28th streets, matching the speed limit west of 24th Street.
"These changes will help make the Camelback corridor a safer place for shoppers, diners and residents," said Stanton. "Mayor Gordon and I have worked together on this issue, organizing a pedestrian task force of residents, businesspeople, community leaders, police and street transportation experts. We will seek other improvements for this area and all around the city to make Phoenix a friendlier place for pedestrians."
Construction on a pedestrian underbridge that will cross below Camelback Road near 25th Street is scheduled to begin later this year.
