Bison Museum Grand Opening Set for October 13 in Scottsdale
October 06 , 2007 by EditorSCOTTSDALE – The much anticipated Grand Opening of the Bison Museum will take place Saturday, October 13, 2007 in Scottsdale. Ribbon cutting ceremonies will be held at 10:00 am. Scheduled to participate in the festivities are U.S. Senator Jon Kyl, Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross, Arizona State Historian Marshall Trimble and more.
The Bison Museum showcases one of the premier bison and western collections in the country. It includes such exhibits as the “Dances with Wolves” display, an array of Native American artifacts, and a vast assortment of bronzes, paintings and prints by the likes of Remington, Russell, Catlin, Clymer, Damrow and others. The extensive Buffalo Bill Cody exhibit features prints, photos, trinkets, documents, one of his famous Sharps rifles and more.
Also highlighted is the recently recovered work of the Flagg family, Scottsdale’s own “first family” of western artists. The Flagg collection includes hundreds of items from paintings to sketches, from the original Parada del Sol program cover artwork to life size wood carved figures of Buffalo Bill, Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok and others.
Early reviews of the museum by such notables as State Historian Marshall Trimble have been very positive. “This is one of the finest museums in the Southwest”, stated Trimble. “They have done a wonderful job over there. The Flagg display is outstanding”.
The Bison Museum is owned and operated by Bison Homes, a premier builder of retreat cabin homes in northeast Arizona. Bison Homes’ owner and president Gary Martinson, a North Dakota native, has personally collected over the years thousands of the items and artifacts on display at the museum. Martinson is proud to see the culmination of this worthwhile project.
“We couldn’t be more excited as we open our doors to the public”, said Martinson. “The Bison Museum is intended to be a fine western presentation for all our visitors, but it will also serve as an outstanding educational setting for the youth of our community”.
The museum is complemented by a western library, gift shop, conference room, party lounge, and the Bison Homes Information Center. It is located at 16641 N. 91st Street in Scottsdale, just north of West World, and is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, closed Mondays.
