Unexplained UTIs? Check Your Shoes!
May 08 , 2007 by EditorHigh-heeled shoes look fabulous, so many women are willing to suffer a bit for beauty, but the effects can extend beyond pinched toes to some other surprising areas of the body. Yes, unknown to many, your shoes may actually be part of the reason you're getting frequent urinary tract infections.
Women are more prone to urinary tract infections than men, and those who get one infection are likely to get them again and again, and they often can't figure out why. Some leading medical experts have performed some "sole" searching and found that when women don their heels, their torsos tilt forward, which takes their hips and spine out of alignment. By repeatedly wearing heels that are too high for one's hip and leg structure, one can also cause "lordosis," an often painful condition that creates pressure on the nerves in the lower back. Lordosis can also contribute to inefficient urination, a precursor for urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Dr. Larrian Gillespie, a retired urologist and author of "You Don't Have to Live with Cystitis," can discuss the various "hidden" causes of recurrent UTIs, including the lower back connection. She can explain how to get to the bottom of the problem, and an OTC product that can help relieve and even prevent subsequent UTIs while you're figuring out the problem.
