Phoenix Public Library Hosts Workshop for Caregivers
February 21 , 2007 by EditorPhoenix Public Library and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center will host a free caregivers’ workshop and resource fair from 5 to 8 p.m. March 22 at Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave.
Michelle Grigaitis, a nurse practitioner with the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s, will open the workshop at 5:45 p.m. with a presentation in the library’s Pulliam Auditorium that explores how caregivers can make time for themselves.
Her presentation will be followed by simultaneous one-hour sessions beginning at 6:30 p.m. The topics and presenters are:
“The Latino Caregiver,” Robert Garcia, M.D., with St. Joseph’s - The unique experiences of, and challenges for, Latino caregivers responsible for older adults or raising grandchildren.
“Caring for the Older Adult with Memory Loss,” Patricio Reyes, M.D., director of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Cognitive Disorders Clinic at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's - Information about the symptoms of dementia and how to best care for older adults with memory loss.
“The Challenge of Caring for Special Needs Children,” Carolynne Garrison, PhD, psychologist, Children’s Rehabilitation Services at St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Center - The challenges of struggling with doctor’s appointments, therapy sessions, school schedules; suggestions on how to best care for a special needs child.
“Parents Again: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren,” Patricia Dominguez, BSW, of Beatitudes Center DOAR - Information and resources for grandparents raising grandchildren.
Between 5 and 8 p.m., representatives from the Arizona Alzheimer’s Association, Beatitudes Center DOAR, Foundation for Senior Living, Chicanos Por La Causa, Raising Special Kids, Huger Mercy Living Center, St. Joseph’s Children’s Rehabilitative Services and the Barrow Neurological Institute will participate in a resource fair. They will be available to talk individually with workshop participants and provide more detailed information about these community services.
