TEMPE, Ariz. – The city of Tempe Transportation Division, Tempe in Motion, will hold a public meeting to present a streetscape concept for Broadway Road May 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tempe Transportation Center, 200 E. Fifth St.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the progress of this project to improve pedestrian and bicycle amenities and enhance the streetscape on Broadway Road from Mill Avenue to Rural Road.

At previous public meetings, residents, as well as representatives from local businesses and community organizations, were asked to provide input about the type of streetscape elements they would like to see along Broadway Road. That feedback was incorporated in a design concept, which will be presented at the May 18 meeting.

The design concept addresses a number of issues identified through the planning process, including adding bicycle lanes, incorporating landscaping, reducing noise, and improving pedestrian facilities. For more information, visit www.tempe.gov/tim or call (480) 350-2775.

An annual survey of commuter transportation habits shows that 56 percent of full-time employees now bus, bike, carpool, vanpool, or walk to work at least once a week – the highest level ever recorded in Maricopa County, according to Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority.

Also, telecommuting and working a compressed schedule is at an all-time high in the Valley with 32 percent of employed adults reporting that they do this at least one day per week. And, for the second straight year, there has been an increase in the frequency of carpooling or vanpooling throughout the work week.

“More people are using alternative forms of transportation now than at any other time in the past 15 years,” said David Boggs, executive director of Valley Metro RPTA. “Gas prices certainly are a factor, but we also are encouraged by the jump in telecommuting, which indicates a willingness on the part of our employers to accept what technology is making more and more possible. Allowing staff to work from home truly can help both traffic congestion and air quality.”

Demand for all services by Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority increased to the highest levels ever recorded in June as gasoline surpassed $4 a gallon and Maricopa County recorded more high pollution advisories in a single month than it did during all of last year.

Ridership on commuter Express bus routes rose 40 percent year-over-year to top 9,000 boardings in June, while new registrants in Valley Metro’s online carpool partner matchlist grew 380 percent year-over-year. Currently, there are more than 7,100 commuters in the database who are looking to share the ride.

Valley Metro’s website-which allows visitors to map a bus trip, purchase online fare, and find a carpool or vanpool partner-also saw enormous spikes in demand. Page views of www.ValleyMetro.org increased 156 percent year-over-year in June to more than 1.38 million views.
