Help bring a smile to a child’s face.  For every ticket purchased for the
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres game on Saturday, Sept. 26 a portion will go towards Give Kids a Smile care program.  Give Kids a Smile care program provides free dental care to underserved children in the
valley.  Students and faculty at A.T. Still Arizona School of Dental and Oral Health along with dentists from the Arizona Dental Association provide basic dental services to children including cleanings, fillings, dental education, and more complex procedures, all at no charge.

Last April, ATSU-ASDOH held the single largest Give Kids a Smile event in the state in the number of children treated, value of services provided, and volunteer participation.  The money raised from ticket sales at the Sept. 26 Diamondbacks game will help pay for Give Kids a Smile patients needing comprehensive follow-up care.

“This fundraiser will continue to help A.T. Stills dental clinic with the treatment of their patients” District 5 Councilmember Dina Higgins said.  “The clinic offers a vital service to our community and the City is glad to be partnering with A.T. Still University for this event.”

“Statistics show that 31 percent of Arizona children have never seen a dentist and 38 percent do not have dental insurance” District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers said.  “The clinic is a great way for children to receive the necessary dental care they otherwise would not be able to afford.”

Fun for Couples at the EEC
The Amazing Race – A Competition For Couples will be held on Tuesday, July 7, from 5:30-7:45 p.m. at the Environmental Education Center. Grab your guy or gal and join the EEC for a friendly “Amazing Race” style competition between couples! The race will whisk you through Veterans Oasis Park and end with a catered, lakeside dinner. A prize will be awarded to the couple that completes the race first, so come ready to play! The cost is $29 per person, and you must be 16 or older. TEMPE, Ariz.–Arizona State University sophomore Thomas Weber has been named to the Watch List for the 2008 Ray Guy Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate punter.

Weber, who last year became the first freshman in history to win the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s best kicker, took over as ASU’s punter in the sixth game of the 2007 season. He averaged 39.2 yards per punt and downed 11 of his 47 punts inside the 20.

Thus far in 2008, Weber has punted 11 times and he is fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference with an average of 42.5 yards per punt. He has also made seven of his eight field goal attempts (the miss was blocked) and all 10 of his extra point attempts on the season, and he ranks third in the Pac-10 in scoring with 31 points.

The Watch List will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists in early November. The national voting body will then vote for the top three finalists, and ultimately the winner. The top three finalists will be announced in late November, and the winner of the Ray Guy Award, which is affiliated with the National College Football Awards Association, will be presented live on ESPN during the ESPNU Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 11, 2008.

The Mesa Association of Sports for the Disabled (MASD) will hold its 15th Annual Fall Fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Mesa Convention Center, 201 N. Center Street in Mesa. The event will include dinner, dancing with live music from Pollack’s Corporate Affair and live and silent auctions of more than 200 items, to help raise funds for intellectually and/or physically disabled children and adults in the community.

MASD has teamed with the Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities and Mesa Public Schools for 19 years to provide programs for these individuals. This fundraiser is anticipated to raise at least one-half of=

the required funding needed to develop team programs, hire coaches, pay for equipment, and uniforms for the special needs’ individuals for the coming year. Celebrity Basketball Game Featuring Charles Barkley and Kurt Warner

NBA, NFL stars and media representatives will join team coaches Charles Barkley and Kurt Warner in a benefit basketball game to raise funds for HIV/AIDS relief in Malawi, Africa. The Assist4Africa Celebrity Basketball Game, presented by Lawns by Les, will take place at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 2, at the Wells Fargo Arena at ASU.

Joining Charles Barkley and Kurt Warner will be former Suns star Dan Majerle and Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Media representatives participating in the game will be FOX 10’s Jude La Cava and Troy Hayden, as well as Brad Steinke from FOX Sports Net. More names will be added as the game nears.

As famous basketball games go, this was quite a good game.

1/2 package (15 oz.) frozen puff pastry dough
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 400º. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Allow frozen puff pastry dough to thaw 15 -20 minutes. Unroll puff pastry sheet onto lightly floured work surface.

Divide pastry sheet into 3 strips along the fold lines. Beat egg white and water in a shallow dish. Sprinkle Parmesan on another work surface.

Dip each pastry strip in the egg white mixture to coat both sides of each strip, then press both sides of each strip firmly onto the Parmesan to coat as thickly as possible.

Cut each strip crosswise with a straight-edged knife into 1/4 inch strips and place 1/2 inch apart on the prepared baking sheets.

Bake until golden and crisp, 8- 10 minutes. Slide the parchment paper with baked straws onto countertop to cool.
