THE COMEDY SPOT ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 AT 8:00PM
BOB HOWARD IS THE OPENER

Bob Howard just scored another comedy gig and it’s in downtown Scottsdale Arizona which is very convenient to many of you. I am guessing that this will be a sell out show even though it’s on a Sunday because the headliners are excellent and many of you may have seen them at our house from Comics on the Grass. Ken and Brady have one of the more unique comedy acts in town and I know that you will enjoy them whether this is the first time or you have seen them before. Here are the details.

The Comedy Spot is located at 7117 E. Third Avenue in Scottsdale (a little east of Scottsdale Road and just north of Indian School Rd.). Admission is $10. You can call at 480-948-4422 and make a reservation and pay cash (only) at the door or reserve on line at www.thecomedyspot.net . There is a 2 item minimum, but they don’t have food other than chips with cheese sauce so you may want to catch dinner early. Doors open around 7:00pm and the show starts at 8:00pm. It is usually over around 9:30pm. The place seats about 110, so it can fill up rather quickly.
This is kind of a bringer thing, so please mention Bob Howard when you make your reservation so that they know you are coming as a result of Bob’s involvement. It should be an excellent show. I hope to see you there.

Horoscopes August 2008

Leo (July 22 - August 22) With the Solar Eclipse New Moon in Leo you may get the boost in respect and promotion that you deserve. As you read in Signs of the Times, however, this lunation is more about getting what you deserve. If you have been a good little boy or girl, your ice cream sundae will have a cherry on top; if you’ve been bad, you will be relegated to eating humble pie. Around the 14th of August there will be a Lunar Eclipse Full Moon—this is the moving fickle finger of fate. When God says, “Let go,” let go. If you do, there is always something better than you could have imagined waiting.

horoscope august 2008

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Mars and Saturn have been getting together in a tight conjunction for a number of weeks in Virgo. This means that you have been accelerating and breaking at the same time—getting nowhere! Be patient and don’t kvetch and kvell too much while you’re in the waiting room. God has a plan and this is the planning stage of your next extreme makeover. For the last dog days of summer, meditate. Journal. Ask what you can do for someone else. It will take your mind off of you. Good astrological idea, huh?

A football player had an eye gouged out during a particularly violent game. Inspired by his coach’s pep talks he refuses to give up the game and has a glass eye fitted. Although he is still able to play football, he knows that he is not the same player he was before. Also, off the field he is having a hard time adjusting, he constantly feels self conscious about the glass eye.

His doctor gives him the good news that complete eye transplants are now possible. But the bad news is that there’s a chronic lack of donors and the waiting list is about five years.

One night, driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, his glass eye fails to detect a guy trying to go around his car on a motorcycle. He changes lanes and sends the motorcycle flying.

It’s late at night and nobody’s around and it’s clear to the football player that the cyclist is dead. He makes a quick decision and cuts out one of the cyclists eyes with his pen knife. He figures if he rushes it to his surgeon he’ll be able to perform the transplant. Before he leaves he pops out his glass eye and places it in the cyclist’s eye socket.

Everything is fine for a few weeks, his new eye is working perfectly. But he starts to worry about the cyclist. Everything had happened so fast - what if he wasn’t dead after all?

He decided to call the local police station and enquire about the accident.

“Yes, the poor fellow was dead alright,” said the officer, “but it’s still all very mysterious.”

The guy felt a chill of fear run up and down his spine, “Mysterious?” he asked.

“Yeah, how did he manage to ride his bike all the way up here from Los Angeles with two glass eyes?”

A one dollar bill met a twenty dollar bill in the cash register of a local grocery store. “Hey, where have you been? I haven’t seen you around here much.”

The twenty answered, “I’ve been hanging out at the casinos, went on a cruise and did the rounds of the ship. I just got back to the States recently, went to a couple of baseball games, to the mall, that kind of stuff. How about you?”

The one dollar bill said, “You know, same old stuff - church, church, church…”

Confused the twenty replied: “What’s a church?”

Life Quotes and Quotes about Life versus Life Insurance Companies

For many years, my collection of Life Quotes was ranked number one on the Altavista Search Engine for the search term Life Quotes.

When Yahoo and Google came along, that page was ranked number one on Google and Yahoo for Life Quotes most of the time but every couple of months the would suddenly be showing nothing but life insurance companies on the first three or four pages of their results for the search term Life Quotes.

That seemed kooky to me. I used to send feedback to Google and Yahoo on a regular basis saying:

“When people search for Life Quotes they are looking for Quotes about Life, not quotations for Life Insurance.” I would send that note to their feedback form every couple of months when they would take all the quotation sites out of their index and put life insurance companies there instead. Both Google and Yahoo finally fixed the problem … they took away their feedback forms so no one can complain about poor quality results.

Here is a newer site where you can get even more Quotes about Life or Life Quotes - Life Quotes and here are a few Life Quotes to whet your appetite.

Love is life. And if you miss love, you miss life.
- Leo Buscaglia

Life is just one damned thing after another.
- Elbert Hubbard

Life without love is like a tree without blossom and fruit.
- Kahlil Gibran

You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.
- Joe Lewis

There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Bands Tuning Up to Play at the State’s Biggest and Best Independence Day Festival

TEMPE, Ariz. - Some of the best local bands in Arizona are getting ready to entertain a big crowd this year at the 57th Annual CBS5 Tempe Town Lake July 4th Festival, presented by TruWest Credit Union and produced by the Kiwanis Club of Tempe. Live music will kick-off in the afternoon with the smoothest singers performing at the biggest Independence Day celebration in the state.

“We have some amazingly talented performers and bands in Arizona and it’s always fun to showcase them at Tempe’s July 4th festival,” said Mike Cryer, Kiwanis Club of Tempe member. “We love to introduce the audience to new music and bring back some of the crowd favorites.”

Scottsdale singer and songwriter James Kole will open the festivities at 4 p.m. with his rockabilly singing style and a swagger to match. Kole released his latest CD, Best of James Kole, in 2007, his seventh CD to date. The Minnesota native moved to Arizona in 1999 and has been performing and writing music for songs and films ever since.

Next on the bill is Arizona’s best funk-soul-rock sextet Calumet, taking the stage at 5 p.m. The band has made musical appearances in venues across the state and has even been honored in the 2007 Phoenix New Times Best Blues/Jazz Category. Self-proclaimed “funkateers,” the six band members of Calumet have covered numerous hit songs and are currently working on their third CD. Calumet’s funky and positive-vibe music will get fans groovin’ as they enjoy the show.

The well-known local band G.A.S., Gear Acquisition Syndrome, will follow at 6 p.m. G.A.S. appeared at the event last year and was so well-received that they were asked to return for the 2008 festival. The band has opened for several high-profile shows in the Valley, including Martina McBride. The five band members all have extensive musical backgrounds, and are sure to impress yet again at this year’s performance.

Headlining the July 4th festival at 8 p.m., after an amazing performance at the event last year, is Chris Parker Project - a local cover band that finds a way to please the musical tastes of all its fans and audiences. Headed by radio station Mix 96.9’s morning host, Chris Parker, the highly popular band has made a name for itself by performing in the nightclub scene across Arizona. Chris Parker Project has shared a stage with bands such as The Fixx, Tears For Fears and, most notably, Maroon 5. The high-energy band will play before the fantastic firework display and then will come back for an encore at 10 p.m.

The CBS5 July 4th Tempe Town Lake Festival will feature great food and drinks, activities for all ages, and a fireworks display that tops any other show in Arizona. For the past 57 years the annual fundraiser has raised millions of dollars that benefit organizations serving children in the Tempe area. At last year’s event about $90,000 was raised that was distributed as grants to nearly 20 different organizations.
