Supporting Our Military, One eMail At A Time

May is Military Appreciation Month and May 26th is Memorial Day.

eMail Our Military’s founder is a military wife, the daughter of a veteran and an avid troop supporter. We’re volunteers from all walks of life who understand that regardless of our political views, our military service members deserve our respect, support & encouragement.

How We Began

eMail Our Military (eMoM) was created in 2001 as a response to the DoD’s cancellation of the “Any Service Member” and “Operation Dear Abby” mail programs. A safe alternative, eMOM picked up where these programs left off.

Using eMail, eMail Our Military (eMoM) provides a safe way for people to continue the tradition of “Any Service Member” mail with a much more personal touch. Service Members register with them for support and are matched with civilians who have registered to send and show their support to our troops.

The latest message form the founder reads as follows:

Subject: Have a Safe & Wonderful Memorial Day Weekend
Throughout our history, we have been blessed by the courage and commitment of Americans who were willing to pay the price of their tomorrows. They have fought and died for our freedom and have kept us sleeping secure each night in safety. Every one of them, from all different backgrounds, races and religions, no matter what battlefield they died on, every one, helped to build this strong nation we love. I’m proud to be an American and I don’t take my freedom for granted.

The great German poet, Goethe, said to his generation:

“What you have inherited from your fathers, earn over again for yourselves or it will not be yours.”

We inherited freedom. We seem unaware that freedom has to be remade and re-earned in each generation of man.
Memorial Day - Email Our Military

As you spend this Memorial Day weekend with your family and friends remember those who have come before you paving the way for the freedoms you enjoy.

All the best,
Trish

Claim Your Name

“Claim Your Name” is the name of a social networking experiment being run by Bill Austin for some of the Job Seekers of the Scottsdale Job Network.

We have found that almost all employers use some aspects of social networking, although most of them do not recognize it as such. Recruiters, hiring managers and staffing professionals use online search engines and social networking sites to locate potential candidates (sourcing) and to research job candidates and their backgrounds.

Claim Your Name is actually a social network for job seekers to enable them to take charge of their online identity and make it much easier for recruiters and employers to find them online.

Imagine if you were out of work and were a job seeker and imagine that your name just happened to be

Britney Spears

or

Lindsey Lohan

or

Michael Moore

Without a strong social network, you are pretty much out of luck.

No one would ever find you online.

This online program called “Claim Your Name” lets you take charge of your name online and tell your story to recruiters, hiring managers and the rest of the world.

Diabetes Expo Phoenix - American Diabetes Expo

PHOENIX Arizona — On Saturday, April 26, 2008, the American Diabetes Association will once again host the free Diabetes Expo—an annual, one-day event showcasing the latest products and services for people affected by diabetes. This highly interactive Phoenix Diabetes Expo event includes activities for people of all ages, including a fun Youth Zone with exciting activities and information for children with diabetes and their families. The Diabetes Expo also provides the public with a unique opportunity to talk with health care experts and obtain important medical and nutrition information.

“If you or a loved one has diabetes – or is at high risk of developing the disease – Diabetes Expo provides a fun, relaxed environment to learn a great deal about the important aspects of prevention and management of diabetes and its serious complications,” said Howard Shulman, DO, FACP, FACOI, Diabetes Expo Chair. “The Diabetes Expo is for all people affected by diabetes, as well as anyone interested in healthy eating and active living.”

Diabetes is the nation’s fifth deadliest disease, and it has no cure. In 2005, there were approximately 469,000 residents of Arizona who self-identified as having diabetes, nearly 7.5 percent of the total population (Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 2005). Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to manage the disease and lower the risk of complications. Early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is critical. Unfortunately, many people living with diabetes do not even know it.

More than 75 exhibitors are participating in the 12th annual ADA Diabetes Expo in Phoenix, which will be held Saturday, April 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Phoenix Convention Center, Halls F & G (33 S. Third St. in Phoenix, Arizona 85004). Admission is Free. Stop by “ADA World” and participate in interactive cooking demonstrations, live Web site demonstrations, and find out how the American Diabetes Association is helping people with diabetes and their families in your community.

Eagle Scout offers residents assistance with picking citrus

TEMPE, Ariz. - A Tempe boy seeking his Eagle Scout designation has taken on a community service project to help elderly and disabled residents with harvesting citrus trees. The boy is available Sunday, April 20, to pick citrus trees for a limited number of Tempe residents for whom the project would be difficult or not possible. Picking citrus when it is ripe helps the entire community by not encouraging the proliferation of roof rats, which feed on citrus that has fallen to the ground.

To take advantage of this service, call Mary Anna Bastin 480-350-5190.
