A trip down memory lane about the women of North Platte, Nebraska sent by Thelly the Storylady, Cardiff by the Sea
What did you do in the war, Mommy?
I went to the USO every Sunday afternoon at 5:00 to sing Gospel Songs along with my youth group. All through WWII. The young Sailors, Soldiers and Marines would gather ’round the piano and sing their hearts out. Then we invited the servicemen to come to our church…it was a 10 block walk, but they tagged along behind us…a big group trailing for a block…then we served refreshments. Our mom’s baked cakes from scratch and served, and served…until all the sandwiches and desserts were gone. We gave them a touch of home while they were away. Our mom’s even wrote their mom’s letters saying they were in church and well fed, spiritually and physically!
I still have visits, letters and phone calls from these young men…now in their 80’s…and they say “Thanks for the memories of La Jolla!”
