Mesa Library Celebrates More than a Century of Service
January 25, 2008 · Published By Kathee
The City of Mesa Library will celebrate more than a century of service beginning this month.Since its humble beginnings, the library had moved at least nine times before a new facility was built in 1960. The new library boasted 17,000 sq. ft. of space and was located at 59 E. 1st St. In 1980, ground was broken for the Main Library’s current location at 64 E. 1st. St.
Another historical change occurred when Frank Schneider became the first male hired as director of the library. In 1964, the library added its first Children’s Library and by late 1965, Police Reserve personnel were hired during the library’s evening hours for about $1.50 an hour.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, the library will be hosting an all-day Community Festival from 9am – 5pm on the north lawn of the Main Library. The celebration continues with special displays and events through July. More details and fun facts to come. For more information, please contact Sandy Rizzo at 480-644-3721.
