URBAN LIFE: An Exhibition of Prints

URBAN LIFE: An Exhibition of Prints
Chandler, AZ: Urban Life is an exhibition by Arizona printmakers who chose to take a look at life in the big city. Phoenix is the 6th largest metropolitan area in the United States and even if you live in one of the smaller cities clustered around it, you find yourself affected by the size and growth surrounding you.
Experiencing the elements of living in an urban environment can be obvious: traffic jams, convenience stores on corners, the constant flow of people. No matter how far from the center of town you’ve moved, you are experiencing the urban sprawl of neighborhoods popping up on all sides, followed by the adobe facades of never ending strip malls.
Six printmakers, all women, turned their conversation of a possible exhibit of their work to the pros and cons of living in an urban environment. The prints being shown for this exhibition reflect these artist’s thoughts and views of urban settings, structures and the people who inhabit them. Observing the constant flow of life around them, these artists chose to display a body of work that deals with the small spaces of time that are compressed between the expectations we have of ourselves and the expectations society imposes on us.
The pace of life today moves in ever changing leaps, but a rich conversation with another human, another woman, another artist, unfolds the inspiration necessary to create art in an urban setting. The artworks being displayed represent a variety of printmaking techniques.
