SWIMkids USA to Serve as an Official Host Location for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on June 3, 2010
Mesa, Arizona, – Dozens of kids will take their place in the record books on Thursday, June 3rd when they participate in The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ at SWIMkids USA. SWIMkids USA is an official host location for the WLSL event, taking place at 2 pm GMT (7 am Arizona Time) at more than 100 aquatic facilities around the globe. WLSL participants will set a new Guinness World Record™ for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted, to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning.
Tragically, drowning is the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death of children ages 1-14. Research shows if a child doesn’t learn to swim by the third grade, they likely never will. The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ was created as a platform to help aquatic facilities and the many different regional, state, national and international water safety and drowning prevention organizations work together to build awareness about this issue.
Gold Medalists Janet Evans and Rowdy Gaines are championing the WLSL effort to help convey that loss of life from drowning can be prevented through awareness and training. As parents, both athletes feel a strong commitment to teaching children how to be safe in and around the water.
“I’m thrilled to be working with The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ to help spread the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™,” said Gaines. “Teaching children to swim is a key component in drowning prevention and The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ is a great way to draw attention to the issue.”
“It is so important to remind everyone to be water aware at the beginning of the summer swimming season,” said, SWIMkids USA president Lana Whitehead “The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ is a perfect way to bring this message to life.”
