Mountain Vista Medical Center installs next generation cardiac technology
Mesa, Ariz. – Mountain Vista Medical Center’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is the first in the state to install the Carto 3 System, the most advanced technology available to improve diagnosis and treatment for cardiac patients.
The technology is used to diagnose and treat patients who need to undergo an electrophysiology procedure that involves a complex mapping process. Currently, the most common way for physicians to view arteries involves a two-dimensional X-ray called an angiogram. Different from angiography, the Carto 3 uses high frequency sound waves that reflect off tissue in the arterial walls and provides the physician with a 3-D view from inside the artery. “This technology, combined with angiography, provides a more complete picture of the diseased artery and helps determine the best treatment option,” says Himanshu Shukla, M.D., cardiologist on the medical staff at Mountain Vista Medical Center. “In addition, it reduces procedure times and radiation exposure, increases patient safety and improves outcomes,” Shukla adds.
Dr. Shukla is an electrophysiologist, a heart specialist trained to treat atrial fibrillation, or “a-fib”. The American Heart Association estimates that 2.66 million people will be affected by a-fib this year. In addition, coronary artery disease as a whole is the number one killer in America, affecting more than 13 million Americans. “This technology will make a difference for patients – it is going to positively impact many people and that is a good thing,” says Shukla.
