Vivaldi/Piazzolla: Eight Seasons Performed by the Symphony Chamber Ensemble

Two unique interpretations of Four Seasons combine for World Music Festival Concert

PHOENIX – As a celebration of the lyrical minds of two different composers, Antonio Vivaldi and Astor Piazzolla, the Phoenix Symphony Chamber Ensemble will perform both of their Four Seasons as a tribute to their compositional styles and cultural flavors.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has been performed endlessly as a Baroque masterpiece – showcasing masterful violinists and the elegant and precise Baroque style. This performance will call for nothing short of those demanding elements. On the other side of the musical spectrum, and zipping in time and space to Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Piazzolla honors Vivaldi’s composition with his own – using the same solo violin, as well as characterizing a year’s change in his native Argentina. Highly emotive and contemplative, Piazzolla’s Four Seasons shares Vivaldi’s passion for composition, emotion, and perfection. Acclaimed baroque violinist Robert Mealy and 2008 Avery Fisher winner Karen Gomyo perform these stunning concerti in juxtaposition.

The 8 pm concerts on January 22, sponsored by the Phoenix Symphony Board of Overseers, and January 23 will be performed at Orpheum Theatre as part of the second annual Target World Music Festival with support from the Target Corporation.

Tickets for “Vivalda/Piazzolla: Eight Seasons” range from $22 to $72 and can be purchased by calling the Phoenix Symphony Box Office at 602-495-1999 or by visiting www.phoenixsymphony.org. Season tickets are still available with packages of Choose Your Own 4 concerts for as low as $80!

Other highlights of The Phoenix Symphony’s 2009/10 Classics Season, sponsored by US Airways, include “Gershwin Piano Concerto” (February 4 – 6), “Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf” (February 18 – 20), and “Tchaikovsky: Suite No. 3” (March 4 – 6.)
