Phoenix Recycling Rewards Program Kicks off at Month’s End

RecycleBank Rewards Program Launches in Phoenix Nov. 30

Phoenix, AZ – The city of Phoenix is partnering with RecycleBank®, a program that rewards households for recycling. The program kicks off Monday, Nov. 30, with 110,000 households in southwest Phoenix selected to participate in a pilot program.

The program is simple – residents selected must register online at RecycleBank.com/phoenix or via phone and continue recycling as usual. RecycleBank will measure the amount of material recycled and then convert that amount into Points that can be redeemed for rewards, gift cards, groceries, merchandise and events at hundreds of local business and national RecycleBank Reward Partners.

The partnership between the city of Phoenix and RecycleBank will motivate residents to continue recycling and complements Mayor Phil Gordon’s 17-point “Green Phoenix” plan designed to make Phoenix the greenest city, as well as the first carbon-neutral city in the nation. Following Mesa, Phoenix is the second city in the state to partner with RecycleBank on a trial basis. Phoenix will evaluate the success of the incentive program on participation, quantity and quality of recyclables, in addition to community support.

Residents in other participating communities have earned hundreds of dollars in rewards value each year through their recycling efforts. The difference between RecycleBank implementation in Phoenix from other cities nationwide is the use of GPS technology, which will be used to identify each property that participates on a given recycling route. Points will be allocated based on an equal share of the total amount that the community recycled. RecycleBank Points can be redeemed via phone or online at RecycleBank.com/phoenix. The Web site also offers educational resources on recycling.

Reward Partners include national retailers such as Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, Ruby Tuesday, Bed Bath & Beyond, and CVS/pharmacy. Local businesses such as Bashas’/Food City, Pros Ranch Market, Cinema Latino, and various local restaurants and shops will make up a large portion of the reward offerings, so residents can Shop Phoenix. There is also an option to donate RecycleBank Points to local school environmental programs, charities and nonprofits.

Phoenix has a history rich in recycling innovation, being the first city in the U.S. to introduce commingled (one blue container) recycling in 1989. With Phoenix Recycles 20th anniversary, the city is continuing to practice environmental leadership and advancements in recycling with programs like RecycleBank.
