Mesa Mayor Smith to Participate on Brookings panel in Washington, DC
Mesa, AZ – Mesa Mayor Scott Smith has been invited to participate in a forum sponsored by the Brookings Institute Metropolitan Policy Program and the National League of Cities. On Thursday, Nov. 19, Mayor Smith will join Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walker in Washington, DC to discuss the impacts of the economy on local governments. The session will be moderated by Wall Street Journal economics editor David Wessel.
“It’s an honor to represent the intermountain west on this panel,” Mayor Smith said. “I look forward to learning how other mayors are managing the new economic reality and sharing how Mesa has adjusted the way we do business.”
The event, Fiscal Challenges Facing Cities: Implications for Economic Recovery, includes an introduction from Bruce Katz, Vice President and Director of the Metropolitan Policy Program and Donald Borut, Executive Director of the National League of Cities followed by remarks from Chris Hoene, Research Director of the National League of Cities and Steve Cochrane of Moody’s Economy.com.
The discussion topics for the forum include city fiscal conditions, the responses being undertaken by creative mayors and the implications for national economic recovery.
