(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) The City of Scottsdale has received major recognition for energy innovations in Scottsdale’s Fire Station 2. The building has been named the Southwest regional winner of the “Green Building of America Award” by Real Estate and Construction Review magazine for its innovative design, use of green building materials, and solar power plant built and installed by Dependable Solar Products, Inc., of Mesa. The solar electric features of the new fire station were designed by ETA Engineering, Inc., LEA-Architects and NP Engineering.

The fire station project was chosen from more than 2,500 nominated projects and will be featured in the upcoming special Real Estate & Construction Review— Southwest Green Success Stories edition due for release in 2010. This is the first fire station in the United States, and the first project for the City of Scottsdale, to receive LEED Platinum level Certification. Dependable has provided solar power for three other Valley fire stations.

Dependable Solar founder and CEO Lane Garrett has been involved in Arizona’s solar power industry for more than 35 years. “Scottsdale Fire Station 2 is a great example of how solar electricity can be incorporated into the design of a new building, and how it can add energy-efficiency to any project,” said Garrett. “We are pleased that this distinctive project has been recognized for excellence.”

“Solar PV panels were incorporated into the design to provide a portion of the station’s energy needs and to showcase architecturally a renewable energy technology that is regionally appropriate,” said Lance Enyart, AIA, LEED AP of LEA-Architects. “The team from ETA and Dependable Solar Products contributed greatly to this project receiving the LEED Platinum Certification, both in designing the 4.1KW system and in incorporating it into the overall green design of the fire station.”

Dependable Solar Products installed the system featuring twenty Sharp ND 208 solar modules and a Xantrex GT inverter, which are designed to provide cost-effective electric power for approximately twenty-five years.
