Mesa Baseline Rotary Club names Mayor Smith Citizen of the Year
Mesa, AZ – Mayor Scott Smith today was awarded the Bill Eaton Citizen of the Year by the Mesa Baseline Rotary Club. Mayor Smith was selected for his enthusiasm, leadership and efforts in inspiring our community to Build a Better Mesa. The Mayor was presented with a plaque and honorary Rotary membership at a club luncheon.
The Bill Eaton Citizen of the Year award honors a member of our community who has demonstrated the qualities of exemplary citizenship. The recipient does not have to be a Rotarian, just someone who makes a small difference in the lives of many, or a big difference in the life of just one. This is an opportunity to thank some of the everyday heroes in our lives.
“Scott Smith knew what a difficult job it would be to lead our city at this time, but he pursued it anyway,” Mesa Baseline Rotary President Aaron Huber said. “He has approached the challenge head-on and with passion, and he has involved the public in making the changes necessary.”
Past winners include a doctor who founded the Hearing Aid Project in Guaymas, Mexico, a young Marine who had just returned from Iraq and a gentleman who helped a friend with a disability live independently.
“It is a great honor for me to accept the Citizen of the Year award and be in the company of past recipients,” Mayor Smith said. “I accept the award on behalf of my fellow councilmembers, City management and staff and the citizens of Mesa who believe in our community and do their best everyday to Build a Better Mesa.”
Mesa Baseline Rotary has been a premiere service club in Mesa since 1974. Their service work has benefitted the United Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, Junior Achievement, Salvation Army, Mesa Public Schools and East Valley Institute of Technology.
