City of Phoenix to Host “Heart Disease 101″ Workshop at Devonshire Senior Center
Phoenix, AZ – A series of free, monthly heart-healthy workshops for older adults and the community are being presented by the city of Phoenix Human Services Department Senior Services Division and the Arizona Heart Institute.
A workshop on “Heart Disease 101” will be presented at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at the Devonshire Senior Center, 2802 E. Devonshire Ave., by Shani Saks, doctor of osteopathic medicine, and director of Women’s Heart and Wellness at the Arizona Heart Institute.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States. The most common factors that contribute to heart disease are smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, history and age. Although family history and age cannot be altered, people can make lifestyle changes to avoid many of the other risk factors.
Treatment of cardiovascular disease, or a heart attack, is only the first step in restoring good health. It does not cure the underlying condition that caused the problem to develop. Further medical evaluation, treatment and lifestyle changes to reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease are essential.
