Eagle Scout Supports Mesa Fire in Drowning Prevention Education

June 25, 2009 · Published By Editor

Mesa, AZ – Jordan Brimley, 15, of Mesa is working on the highest advancement rank in the Boy Scouts of America.  His Eagle Scout project directly supports the Mesa Fire Department in their educational campaign on Drowning Prevention.

Jordan, along with over 40 volunteers have spent time assembling over 3,500 water safety bags containing drowning prevention information.  He and his volunteers will be distributing the bags in northwest Mesa this coming Saturday.

This area was chosen because of the high number of families, the high rate of drowning calls, and because this is his neighborhood.  Jordan chose to focus his project on drowning prevention because he wanted to impact many families in the community.

Having heard about numerous drowning incidents on the news and talking with his grandfather, a retired Mesa Fire Captain, he felt there was a need to help spread the word about watching children around water with constant eye-to-eye supervision.  This key message is something that many new families relocating to the area may not be aware of.

Jordan Brimley“We are very pleased to partner with Jordan and his Eagle Scout project.  Most people are not aware that Arizona has the second highest child drowning rates in the nation,” Mesa Fire Department Drowning Prevention Coordinator Michele Long said.  “It’s imperative for all to understand that when it comes to family and water, no one is drown proof.  Constant eye-to-eye supervision, properly working barriers around all water, and learning CPR can make a huge difference in saving the life of a family member.”

For more information on this project please contact Michele Long, MFD Water Safety Coordinator, at 480-682-7780.
