Trip marks third mayoral footprint for Arizona Sun Corridor efforts

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and Goodyear Mayor James Cavanaugh recently led a delegation to L.A., each securing strong business connections that will benefit their cities.

The trip was part of a joint economic partnership with Tucson and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council aimed at seeking opportunities that will advance the Arizona Sun Corridor. This megapolitan stretch uniting Phoenix and Tucson will be one of 10 U.S. markets expected to see most of the nation’s growth in the next 35 years.

The mayors attended five appointments from L.A. to Orange County over the course of a single day. Those appointments ranged from meeting with executives from a financial services institution, to a national site-selector, to officials with a private college looking at expansion.

“Mayors serve an important role in our California Strategy,” said Scarlett Spring, GPEC’s senior vice president of business development. “Mayor Lane and Mayor Cavanaugh serve as ambassadors for our region as well as provide a unique perspective into city management, planning. They were instrumental in the success of the trip.”

Cavanaugh and Lane made key connections, including one with a contractor who finances and builds private colleges. With both cities interested in attracting private colleges, that meeting was an important one.

“I very much enjoyed the events and the company of my fellow Arizona travelers,” Cavanaugh said. “Our visits certainly fulfilled our objectives to find new partners and uncover innovative approaches for furthering quality economic growth within our region.”

Lane agreed: “I was glad to join Jim Cavanaugh and GPEC in a proactive business development visit to Southern California. I believe this is the kind of entrepreneurial approach we need to build our Arizona economy.”

“Arizona Sun Corridor: Open for Business” is a pilot program between GPEC and Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities (TREO) that is designed to stimulate California business interest among targeted industries such as aerospace/defense, healthcare/bioscience, transportation/logistics, renewable energy and information communications technology.
