Gilbert Public Schools is pleased to congratulate Desert Ridge High School instructor, Sylvia Grace, for winning a Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation 2009 Building the Future Award. She will be recognized and will receive her award at the Second Annual Project Lead the Way® National Symposium on November 12, 2009 in Austin, Texas. The award includes an Interactive Classroom Presentation System donated by 3M, and a $1,000 unrestricted cash award.

According to the SME Education Foundation website, the Building the Future Awards program provides public recognition and financial rewards to secondary schoolteachers, principals, and other educational professionals who are furthering excellence in engineering education through the Project Lead The Way® program. By honoring outstanding educators, the Building the Future Awards program strives to attract, motivate, and reward the achievements of talented educators.

Sylvia Grace is a Project Lead The Way® Engineering and AP Chemistry Instructor at Desert Ridge High School. She received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Chemical Engineering from New Mexico State University, and her Associate degree in Secondary Education from Arizona State University. Mrs. Grace has worked at IBM, Dell, and Multek as a process engineer, and at Atmospheric Science Labs as a research engineer. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher and is a recipient of a prestigious 2005 Milken National Educator Award.

Project Lead The Way® is a nationally-recognized pre-engineering curriculum. Students are prepared, through four years of intensive application level coursework, to enter an engineering program at the university or enter the technology work force directly after high school.

Desert Ridge High School was the first high school in the state of Arizona to offer PLTW courses to the students.
