Public is invited to hands-on demonstrations of daVinci Surgical System
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Chandler-area residents are invited to take a free test drive of the million-dollar daVinci robotic surgical system and meet Scottsdale Healthcare surgeons this Sunday, May 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 pm at Chandler Fashion Center.
The daVinci is the world’s leading surgical robot for minimally invasive procedures, resulting in smaller incisions, less post-operative pain and faster recovery times. The event is being hosted by Scottsdale Healthcare, the state’s pioneer in robotic surgery. Surgeons slated to attend include urologists Dr. Dale Russell and Dr. Michael Darson, and OB/GYN Dr. Mike Janicek.
Surgeons guide a 4-armed robot using three-dimensional HD magnification and special computer-guided instruments. Two handles at a console maneuver tiny instruments inserted through dime-size incisions. Only a few sutures are needed instead of the large incisions required with traditional open surgery.
Surgeons specializing in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare will be on hand to talk about the precision and faster recovery times allowed by robotic procedures.
“In a robot-assisted prostatectomy, the surgeon makes only a few small incisions, instead of one large incision from pubic bone to belly button as in traditional, open surgery,” explains Dr. Gil Brito, a urologist and medical director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare.” Robotic prostatectomy typically results in less post-operative pain, shorter recovery time, quicker return of continence and less blood loss.”
Scottsdale Healthcare has the longest experience with the daVinci robot of any Arizona hospital, acquiring the state’s first daVinci in 2001. Surgeons are using three daVinci robots at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital and Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center.
The high-tech surgical robot evolved from prototypes developed for military battlefield surgical application. It is FDA approved for use in minimally invasive urologic surgical procedures, general laparoscopic surgical procedures, gynecologic laparoscopic surgical procedures, general non-cardiovascular thoracoscopic surgical procedures and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures.
