“Refugees and their Journey” to be Presented at Tempe Council Chambers May 13
TEMPE, Ariz. – The City of Tempe Diversity Department is offering a program entitled, “Who’s Your Neighbor?”- A Brown Bag Lecture Series on Cultural Awareness. This program is a series of presentations focused on learning about who lives, works, and plays in the Tempe community. While individuals may know their own culture, traditions and lifestyles, some people may not know about or understand their neighbor’s cultures, traditions and lifestyles. The purpose of the lecture series is to create a greater understanding of each other in an effort to eliminate biases.
The program will be presented on Wednesday, May 13th, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Tempe City Council Chambers, 31 E. 5th Street, Garden Level. Parking is available in the parking garage located at 177 E. Fifth St., immediately east of City Hall.
Tempe is home to many refugee families, with a large Somali refugee community residing in South Tempe. Every year millions of refugees are forced to flee their home countries due to persecution, war and human rights violations. Often classified unfairly with economic migrants, refugees flee their countries not for economic gain, but to escape persecution and threats to their lives. Come and hear our speaker, Eman Yarrow, Refugee Services Manager from the Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program, as he shares information on the refugee resettlement program, services available to refugees, and trends in refugee arrival. You will also hear from Somali refugees who will share their personal stories with us.
This program is offered free, and no registration is necessary. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch, and dessert will be provided. For further information, call Ginny Belousek, Sr. Diversity Specialist, at 480/350-8979.
