Tempe’s Kyrene De Los Ninos is McDonald’s “Readers Are Leaders” Award Winner, School Library Receives $1,000 Grant
TEMPE, Ariz. – McDonald’s Owner/Operators of Arizona and the Arizona Parent Teacher Association (PTA) announced in April that Kyrene de los Ninos Elementary School is a Readers Are Leaders® Award winner, and is receiving a $1,000 for its school Library.
Kyrene de los Ninos PTA is one of 10 Arizona PTAs receiving $1,000 grants for its literacy activities from McDonald’s Readers Are Leaders Award program. The grant program provides funding for the books and reading materials for school libraries to enhance book collections.
Applications were judged on creativity, ability to make good use of books, and solid strategy for long-term reading promotion activities.
Kyrene de los Ninos PTA President Carrie Gomez stated that their school utilizes a Reading Log program to encourage students to read. Students read at home and log the minutes read each night. Every month calendars are turned in to the Media Center. Every participating student receives a free book each month. When a student reaches a certain goal (hours read) they get lunch with Ninos principal Dr. Gomez del Castillo. Grant money will be used to stock the shelves of their library with a variety of book titles to fit the school’s wide range of readers.
McDonald’s and Arizona PTA began the grant program in 2007 and have since awarded $35,000 to Arizona PTA school libraries.
“Arizona PTA believes that one of the most important things families and schools can do is to encourage children to love to reading. Projects like McDonald’s “Readers Are Leaders” provide the tools to develop this love for reading and thereby improve learning,” Vivian Vincent, president of Arizona Parent Teacher Association.
“We are proud to support literacy in our local schools,” said Michelle Slayton, Tempe McDonald’s owner/operator. “Our restaurants are committed to the communities we serve, and investing in education is a top priority.
