Christopher Salvino, MD, joins hospital’s Trauma Services program
PHOENIX – Christopher Salvino, MD, has joined Banner Good Samaritan’s Trauma Services program, which was recently verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) as a Level 1 program, demonstrating the expertise and resources to care for the most serious life-threatening injuries. Dr. Salvino comes to Banner Good Samaritan from John C. Lincoln Hospital, where he served as the medical director of the Trauma Center.
With more than 13 years of experience at ACS Level I trauma centers, Dr. Salvino brings a great deal of expertise to the Banner Good Samaritan Trauma Services team. Previously, Dr. Salvino developed a new ACS Level I trauma center in Illinois, and remained at the hospital as medical director of the center for 10 years.
Dr. Salvino has also led research in trauma and aerospace medicine, with published work appearing in various books, trade magazines and journals. He has done pioneering work in the field of trauma laparoscopy, including clinical research and teaching. In addition, Dr. Salvino has sat on several editorial advisory boards, including: Air Ambulance, The Journal of Emergency Care, Rescue and Transportation, Rescue Technology, Air Medical Journal and Aviation and Space and Environmental Medicine.
In addition to the work he does in the States, Dr. Salvino has been on three surgical medical missions-to Somalia with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), and Bolivia and Kenya with Joliet Diocese.
Dr. Salvino is a board-certified general surgeon. He earned his MD from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He also holds three Master’s degrees in aerospace medicine, flight test engineering and space studies, and two Bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and biology. In addition, he is an ACS Fellow.
“We are extremely fortunate to have such a highly-trained and accomplished physician join our trauma program,” said Paul Dabrowski, MD, interim medical director of Trauma Services at Banner Good Samaritan. “The hiring of such a high-quality surgeon assists us in our goal to become Arizona’s preeminent trauma center. We are happy to have him join our team.”
Banner Good Samaritan’s Level I Trauma Center was recently verified by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma (COT). The COT validates how high the bar is raised by the hospital, and indicates the quality of care each trauma patient receives. COT-verified trauma centers must meet criteria in addition to ACS demands. ACS COT has verified three Level I trauma programs (Banner Good Samaritan, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn) and one Level II trauma program (John C. Lincoln Hospital) in the Phoenix area.
