Tempe Earth Day Event Celebrates All Things Green on April 22
Join the City of Tempe in an effort to celebrate all things green on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 by participating in a 5K run and expo to raise awareness of environmentally friendly practices.
From 5- 8 p.m., check out the City of Tempe Services Pavilion and see how Tempe provides environmentally-friendly services to residents and visitors alike, including mass transportation, water and recycling services. Sunflower Market will be on hand to talk about organic and locally grown produce and green products. ASU School of Sustainability will have a display on how different landscapes can create or reduce heat around your home and community. Second Skin. a band featuring a 13-year-old and two 10 year olds, will play from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Have an extra pair of sneakers? The Nike Reuse a Shoe program will accept donations in hopes of recycling them to create new sports and playground surfaces. The new aloft Hotel on Tempe Town Lake, which is going for LEED certification, will be giving away a free night’s stay.
The race starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Tempe Center for the Arts Park and runs along the south bank of Tempe Town Lake. Take in the beautiful sunset while watching the lake illuminate with the colors from the new light rail bridge. The Tempe Center for the Arts Park is located at 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway, near Hardy Drive.
Prior to the race there will be a costume contest at 6 p.m. for those who wish to do the course dressed in a manner to encourage Earth-friendly activities. Run like a bee, a recyclable can or a daisy. Race with Mother Nature and win prizes.
Sponsors for the event include Regency Condominiums, Sweet Tomatoes, Sunflower Market and the City of Tempe, among others.
