New historical novel portrays hardship and hope from author’s own family history
Gilbert, AZ – In her recently released novel, Counting the Cost, best-selling author Liz Adair captures the essence of hardship and hope in an expertly crafted story based on her own family history.
Set in the southwest in the 1930s, Counting the Cost tells the story of Heck Benham, a handsome, hard-riding cowboy, who loves the rodeo and looks forward to spring roundup. His life is turned upside down when Mrs. Ruth Reynolds moves from back east into Heck’s homeland and into his heart.
As the stark contrast in their lives is played out in a territory that is, itself, coming into its own, Ruth and Heck challenge the social rules of provincial New Mexico as they face a trail of life-changing decisions at every turn.
“They lived through great tests of love, honor, loyalty, integrity, strength, and forgiveness,” says Cecily Markland, owner of Gilbert, Arizona-based Inglestone Publishing and publisher of Counting the Cost. “It’s a riveting story of choices, consequences, and the cost of redemption that rings true because it’s based on the lives of actual people.”
“Counting the Cost is a novel that will break your heart and elevate your spirits. … a love story as poignant as it is beautiful,” says Ronald Shook, PhD, Associate Professor of English, Utah State University.
Western novelist, Marsha Ward, agrees, saying, “This book is a poignant look at a grand passion between opposites, a sensory delight filled with lush descriptions, spot-on dialogue, and a well-told story of choice and accountability. Liz Adair is a masterful storyteller. Don’t miss reading this book.”
Counting the Cost is Liz Adair’s fifth novel. She is the author of the three-book Spider Latham series and the best-selling The Mist of Quarry Harbor. She says, unlike her other meticulously plotted books, Counting the Cost, “just welled up inside and poured out of me.” She says the book not only helped her heal from the loss of her mother, it also gave her a chance to explore and to demystify a family secret.
“It’s something I felt compelled-called, even-to write,” Liz says.
Liz now teaches workshops in “Writing Family History as Fiction” and has published a booklet by the same name to help others write stories from their past. ”I believe now, more than ever, people appreciate stories that give accurate and true-to-life portrayals showing that great good can come even in the midst of hardships,” Cecily says.
