April 15, 2009 · Published By Administrator

Get involved in your neighborhood, meet new neighbors and learn how to utilize City services.

The City of Mesa’s next Building Strong Neighborhoods Initiative will be held in Council District 5 in the neighborhood that lies within the boundaries of McLellan Road, Greenfield Road, Brown Road and 48th Street.

The initiative will also include the adjacent Valencia Park Neighborhood.  The program will begin with an orientation or “kickoff” meeting Tuesday, April 21 at Barbara Bush Elementary School, 4925 E. Ingram, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  There will be food donated by Pancho’s Mexican Buffet and free child-care will be provided.   There will also be a raffle for prizes donated by local restaurants.

During the orientation meeting, residents will hear results of a survey
the City of Mesa Neighborhood Outreach Office has been conducting in the neighborhood.  Resident action teams will be formed to address public safety, traffic and neighborhood issues.  The meeting will include an open house for residents to learn about existing City services and programs.

“I am very excited to see what comes of the Building Strong Neighborhoods program in this area.  People have expressed concern over a variety of issues, and many neighborhood residents have already shown interest in taking an active role in doing something about these concerns,”

District 5 Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator Lindsey VerStraeten said.  “Amazing things can happen when neighbors start meeting each other, learn about resources available to them, and decide that they want to make their area safer and stronger.”

The Building Strong Neighborhoods Initiative will also include a special project Saturday, May 2.  Volunteers will be painting curb addresses, painting fire hydrants and participating in a “neighbor helping neighbor” cleanup.  Neighbors wishing to receive clean up assistance, or those wishing to provide assistance should call Lindsey VerStraeten at (480) 644-5434. Clean Sweep dumpsters will also be available from April 24 to May 8.

The Building Strong Neighborhoods Initiative is designed to preserve and strengthen neighborhoods by providing residents and businesses with education, training and access to existing resources to address neighborhood concerns.  Neighborhood Services is conducting one initiative in each Council District during the 08/09 fiscal year.
