City of Tempe to Host Free Classic Car Show to Celebrate New Garage
Tempe, AZ – Parking is easier than ever in downtown Tempe with the opening of a new 438-space parking garage right in the middle of the Mill Avenue District at Fifth Street just east of Mill Avenue at Forest and spanning the distance to Sixth Street.
With the opening of this garage as well as the forthcoming US Airways garage at Third Street and Mill, there are nearly 12,000 parking spaces available in downtown Tempe. The two new garages will add 1,700 spaces to the city’s parking inventory.
For a map of all of Tempe’s existing parking garages, visit www.tempe.gov/parking. For information on Mill Avenue, please visit http://www.downtowntempe.com/.
The garage was built by McCarthy Construction. An expansion of Sixth Street Park is ongoing and will open later this year.
To celebrate the new garage, the City of Tempe is hosting a free classic car show with food, music and cars. The official ribbon cutting will take place on Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m. at the garage on Forest and Fifth Street, just east of Tempe City Hall. The show itself is Saturday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Come Back Buddy, a Buddy Holly tribute band, will play from noon – 3 p.m. on Saturday. Food will be available for purchase and guests may browse information booths on transportation and development. The car show will take place on the roof level of the garage. Those attending the show will be welcome to park for free in the remaining levels.
Clubs showing cars include the Tempe Nuevo Club, the Shriners and many individual car enthusiasts.
Tempe is one of the few Arizona cities where driving a car is not required to get around. Tempe offers the Orbit neighborhood circulator, the Flash bus system, Metro light rail and was named the most walkable city in Arizona by Walkscore.com. Downtown Tempe scored 98 out of a possible 100 for pedestrians. There are 150 miles of bike paths in Tempe also. And if you need to travel a bit further, Sky Harbor is minutes away.
