SRP Appliance Recycling Program Continues to Help the Environment

Get Cash Back, Save Energy and Help the Environment

Salt River Project’s popular Appliance Recycling Program continues to pay SRP electric customers to turn in their spare refrigerators or stand-alone freezers while also helping the environment. Since its launch in September, the program has collected and recycled more than 2,500 appliances – or the equivalent of removing more than 5,000 cars from the road and more than 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

SRP’s Appliance Recycling Program makes it easy to properly dispose of inefficient older, working refrigerators and freezers.  SRP provides free pickup of these units and then mails customers a check for $30 per qualifying appliance.  There’s a limit of two units annually per customer account.

About 95 percent of each refrigerator is recycled through the program, including metals, plastics, glass, polyurethane foam insulation, oil and refrigerant. Recycling just one appliance will keep reusable items out of landfills and reduce carbon dioxide by up to 10 tons — or about the same emission reductions as parking two family cars for a year.

Debbie Kimberly, SRP’s manager of Energy Efficiency and Policy Analysis, said refrigerators and freezers are among the top three or four largest energy consumers in most Valley homes behind air conditioners and water heaters.  She said 13 percent of SRP customers have two or more refrigerators and nearly 23 percent of homes have one or more stand-alone freezers, often stored in a hot garage. Recycling a working second refrigerator can save up to $100 a year in energy costs, Kimberly said.

To schedule a pickup and for more details about the recycling program, SRP customers should call (602) 236-4225 or visit www.srpnet.com/powerwise.

SRP is the largest provider of electricity to the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, serving about 935,000 customers in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
