Chinese Week Commemorates 30th Anniversary of Taipei Relationship

The Phoenix Chinese Week Committee and the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission commemorate the 30th anniversary of Phoenix’s Sister City relationship with Taipei, Taiwan during Chinese Week 2009.

Phoenix will celebrate Chinese New Year 4707, ‘The Year of the Ox,’ with educational and cultural events at several locations throughout the valley.

The three-day Chinese Week culture and cuisine festival is free and takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Chinese Cultural Center, 668 N. 44th St.

The festival features live entertainment including, dragon and lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, folk and traditional dances, musical performances, a Children’s Pavilion, arts and crafts, shopping and much more.

The Taipei 30th Anniversary Grand Performance takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Orpheum Theater, 203 W. Adams St.

The Taipei Grand Performance highlights variety performances by a Taipei performance troupe in traditional costumes. The act combines Chinese acrobatics with music and dance. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com or by calling the Convention Center Box Office at 602-262-7272.

Other events include a Taipei photo exhibit at the Phoenix City Hall Atrium, 200 W. Washington St. and a 10-course Chinese New Year banquet on Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Great Wall Restaurant, 3446 W. Camelback Road.
