Students to learn about Tempe city government
January 7, 2009 · Published By Editor
Tempe, Arizona – Students will wield the gavel at a mock Tempe City Council meeting and shadow city officials during City of Tempe Student Government Day on Jan. 14.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors from Corona del Sol, Tempe, Marcos de Niza, McClintock, and Compadre high schools are participating in this annual event hosted by the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC). The program teaches leadership and the importance of community involvement.
Students are given the unique opportunity to experience city government from the inside.
Following welcoming remarks from MYAC chairperson Veekas Shrivastava and Mayor Hugh Hallman at 8:45 a.m., in the Tempe City Council Chambers, each student will shadow a City of Tempe official for the morning.
Student Government Day culminates in a mock City Council meeting from 1:45-3:15 p.m. in the Chambers, at 31 E. Fifth Street. The meeting is run entirely by students and is open to the public. Students discuss an issue that has already come before the Mayor and City Council.
