Traffic restrictions for Mesa light rail grand opening

December 23, 2008 · Published By

Because of Mesa’s official light rail grand opening celebration, westbound Main Street will be closed between Longmore and Dobson Saturday, Dec. 27 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. except for event traffic and buses. Eastbound traffic on Main Street will remain open.

The following restrictions will be in effect during those hours:

  • Westbound traffic heading to the event will be directed to turn right onto Sycamore to the park-and-ride
  • Only buses will be allowed to proceed westbound at Sycamore
  • Thru traffic will be detoured northbound on Longmore to University

All traffic not heading to the event is recommended to use the following detours:

  • Eastbound and westbound traffic should use Broadway or University
  • Northbound and southbound traffic should use Alma School or Dobson

The closures are necessary to accommodate event related vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Mesa’s official celebration, “It All Starts Here!” presented by SRP and the Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau, takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The event features free rides on the light rail train and Valley Metro Link bus as well as food, information and entertainment.  Entertainment includes a classic car show, a kids zone and several bands, headlined by Grand Funk Railroad.  With the exception of limited City services, the event is entirely funded by businesses and organizations in the community.

On December 27, 12 years of planning, research, construction and development will culminate as the first METRO light rail trains leave their stations, marking a new era in public transportation for the Valley.  The METRO Grand Opening weekend will be an experience for the ages filled with community celebrations, live entertainment, food and beverage and free rides.  Hop on board the METRO from any of our 28 stations and explore what you are now conveniently connected to on the 20-mile light rail line.  For more information on the METRO Grand Opening, visit www.metrolightrail.org/grandopening.
