Area merchants thrilled to see trains in action

TEMPE, Ariz – Monday morning’s back to work, especially after the holidays, but some Tempe businesses are making the transition a little easier for some of the inaugural light rail commuters with music, free flowers and breakfast.

Those who choose to ride light rail to work starting at the Apache and Dorsey station will be treated to a happy Monday by area businesses on Dec. 29. While they wait for the train, they will be served a continental breakfast with a Turkish flair, hear some live music and maybe get a flower.

Mike Ayashe, owner of Cafe Istanbul, will offer samples of pastries and coffee in front of his restaurant from 5-9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29. Cafe’ Istanbul was highly impacted by light rail construction and now has a large parking lot and light rail station in front of the restaurant. Ayashe is extremely excited about the opening of the line and is certain it will improve his business. Visit Cafe Istanbul & Market, 1310 E. Apache Boulevard #101, Tempe, or call 480 731-9499.

Starting at 6 a.m., Watson Flowers will give free carnations to the first 100 riders who board at the light rail station. David Johnson has patiently waited for opening day to arrive. He has prepared his 82-year-old store for light rail by renovating while the road work was underway. Now both his store and Apache Boulevard are ready for business. Visit Watson Flower Shops, 2425 E Apache Blvd, Tempe, or call 480 967-0161.

Tommy Anderson, lead singer of Ringo McLennonson, will perform Beatles tunes that morning, possibly including Ticket to Ride, with other members of the band.  Visit the website Ringo McLennonson for more information about this Tempe-based band that plays around the state.

Cafe Istanbul is located on the north side of the Apache/Dorsey station, west of McClintock Drive on Apache Boulevard. The party will be located in the parking area.

Tempe is helping shoppers remember those businesses that were adversely impacted by light rail construction with its Rail Rewards program. Anyone who visits 10 shops along the light rail line can win great prizes. No purchase is required to enter. Download a form at www.destinationtempe.com and be entered to win a signed photo of the light rail bridge by artist Joanne West, a $250 US Airways gift card, an oil change from Motorist Service, or free tickets to Childsplay’s January production of Busytown.
