Senior Citizens Honored for Volunteer Efforts

More than 750 senior citizens were honored by the city of Phoenix at a luncheon today for volunteering at least 35 hours each in the past year at their respective senior centers.

This year 757 volunteers logged 151,958 hours at the city’s 17 Human Services Department senior centers, equaling $1,048,509 in services. Through the city’s senior programs, volunteers provide support services for older adults such as greeting participants, serving meals, assisting office staff, facilitating activities and planning trips.

“Our seniors have outdone themselves this year with their enthusiastic volunteer efforts,” said Doris Marshall, Phoenix Human Services Department deputy director. “Because of their efforts, the senior centers have been able to offer more exciting, diverse and creative activities and programs.”

The city’s senior centers provide people 60 years or older and adults with disabilities with services, including nutrition programs; congregate meals; home-delivered meals; educational opportunities; recreation and social activities; and information, referral, advocacy, transportation and counseling/casework services. A calendar of events and menus are available at each center.

The luncheon, which included entertainment, was hosted by the city’s Human Services Department Senior Services Division with sponsorship this year by Humana, which is covering the entire cost of the event.
